Rose McGowan is an Italian-born actress best known for her role as Paige Matthews on the WB television series Charmed, and the cult film The Doom Generation. She has also appeared in several major Hollywood films, including Scream, Jawbreaker, and the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double-feature Grindhouse. McGowan is currently the co-host of the Turner Classic Movies’ film-series program, The Essentials.
She was born in Florence, Italy and spent her early childhood in the Children of God’s communes, often traveling Europe with her parents. Through her father’s art contacts in Italy, McGowan became a child model and appeared in several Italian magazines. Her parents moved back to the United States when she was 10, when they divorced and she lived with her father. Her role in the 1995 dark comedy The Doom Generation brought her to the attention of film critics and earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination. McGowan was subsequently cast in a supporting role in the 1996 hit horror film, Scream.
She spent the majority of the 1990s appearing in a variety of independent films and in 2001, was cast in a leading role on the popular TV series Charmed, replacing Shannen Doherty after she left the show. In 2006, McGowan had a brief role in Brian De Palma’s adaptation of James Ellroy’s The Black Dahlia, and starred in the Grindhouse double-feature in 2007.
